Developing an energy reduction and decarbonisation business cases involves identifying and quantifying the potential economic benefits of reducing an organisation’s energy consumption and carbon footprint, including cost savings from energy efficiency measures, access to energy efficiency and low carbon solutions’ markets, risk mitigation from regulatory and geo-political changes, improved brand reputation, and potential for innovation and competitive advantage, all while outlining the necessary investments and implementation strategies to achieve these goals.

The Business Case Development in Energy Management course will provide delegates with an understanding of compiling business cases for energy/carbon reduction projects, identifying problems, feasible solutions and detailed project scopes, and calculating costs, benefits and alignment with their organisation’s strategies. It will examine typical payback methods and payback periods, project budgeting and estimating costs and financial benefits for energy and carbon reduction projects. The course will also cover the basics of the funding landscape for decarbonisation and energy efficiency, including public funding streams and financing options.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the basics of energy and carbon emissions assessment and how to identify areas of the most significant reduction potential
  • Be able to define clear energy and emission reduction targets and develop pathways including potential interventions like energy efficiency upgrades, renewable energy adoption, fuel switching, process optimisation, etc.
  • Understand cost analysis such as upfront cost of the project, ongoing operational cost savings from reduced consumption and potential incentives
  • Understand financial evaluations and payback periods
  • Be able to assess benefits of a sound business case such as risk mitigation, brand reputation, employee engagement
  • Be able to draft an implementation plan for an energy reduction/decarbonisation project
