Heat Network Zoning – DESNZ Policy Workshops
As part of the ongoing development of the proposals for heat network zoning, the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) is hosting two MS Teams-based policy workshops that focus on particular topics:
- Pricing Policy and the Process
- Carbon Intensity Limits within zones and Cost Caps
You may already know that heat networks distribute heat from centralised sources to a variety of different customers, such as public buildings, shops, offices, hospitals, universities, and homes. This could be across entire cities or to a selection of neighbouring buildings. Heat network zoning will fundamentally transform the development of new heat networks in towns and cities across England. By designating geographic zones where we expect heat networks are expected to be the lowest cost solution for decarbonising heat. Heat network zoning will give local communities the tools to accelerate the development of heat networks in their towns and cities.
Heat network zoning may affect you or your organisations if you work with or have buildings located inside future heat network zones.
The DESNZ events are particularly relevant to organisations such as local authorities, heat network developers and their supply chain partners, plus potential heat consumers from buildings that are likely to be required to connect to networks in heat network zones.
These buildings could include:
- New buildings
- Non-domestic buildings above an agreed size and energy use threshold
- Buildings that are already communally heated
These sessions will provide an opportunity for you to hear more detail on the DESNZ draft proposals, take part in Q&A sessions and offer valuable feedback that will help the process of refining the zoning proposals.
Workshop 1
Thursday 29th August 2024 (16.00 – 17.00) and covers Pricing Policy and the Process for selecting heat network zone developers.
Workshop 2
Tuesday 3rd September 2024 (14.00 – 16.00) and covers the topics of Carbon Intensity Limits within zones and Cost Caps for developers connecting heat consumers within zones.
